Steps in Time
Mixed junior group from North Dorset. Traditional English social dances as well as Maypole and regional dances.
Coming on Saturday
Steps in Time have an ongoing aim to keep local traditions alive by passing them on to the next generation and sharing them with the wider community. Although based in a small village in rural North Dorset we have reached thousands by performing not only in our locality but also further afield in the UK as well as abroad. We have been lucky to represent England & Dorset aboard, perform at the 2012 Olympics & Paralympics, Appear on TV (local TV, Ade in Britain, Meet the Ancestors & Morris: A Life with Bells On), and performed across the region. We have represented England abroad a number of times now including performing in front of the President of Switzerland and Belgian royalty. By teaching the young people involved with the group traditional dance, drama, games and rhymes to a sufficient level to perform in public we not only keep these traditions alive but also help build confidence in the young people. Other effects include helping to keep our members fit and aid better coordination. By performing at many events we are able to show or remind the wider community about these traditions. The group is entirely volunteer based. No-one receives payment for teaching. No charge is made to take part as it was key to our founder that it should always be available to all. We have great community support and we rely on donations from locals, venues we perform at, and those parents that are able to donate. Traditional skills such as Dorset buttons (formally a major industry in North Dorset, exported throughout the world and even found on Royal clothing). Children’s rhymes and songs. Mummers play’s such as St. George and the Dragon. Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/stepsintimeuk Donate at http://localgiving.com/stepsintime
